The Color of Secrets edition by Lindsay Jayne Ashford Literature Fiction eBooks

This is the story of three generations of women beginning with a young woman with a toddler whose husband has been lost at sea and presumed dead. It is wartime in England and the young women are working on the railroad repairing and relaying the ties that have been bombed. Due to the severe shortages of food, the women are often ill and starving. Trains loaded with allied soldiers are sent to the end of the line, not to help, but to possibly guard the shoreline nearby. A dance is held and the protagonist meets a young handsome African American man from Louisiana. They fall in love and begin a secret affair which is forbidden by the Armed Forces and the racial prejudices of the day. She becomes pregnant and the secret of her biracial baby tears the family apart for many generations, spanning Great Britain, America and Wales. It is a story of love, misunderstandings, abandonment, betrayal, friendships, the death of a child and husbands, suicide and most of all: prejudice. This epic novel tells of forgiveness and redemption through the eyes of children who demand that the secrets are lifted to preserve their own sanity. JudiSocialWorker

The Color of Secrets edition by Lindsay Jayne Ashford Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

The best read I have had in a very long time. I know this is fiction written with a war time setting, but the story line is really plausible. Set in England, allied forces from many countries are gathered in combat support. The Americans are supported by several squares of white GIs and one squad of black GIs, mostly for the segregated south. The GIs (including the blacks) find it easy to mix with the English girls. As expected, there are accusations of rape, interracial babies are born, and black GIs are hanged. As the war ended and the interracial babies became adults, some wanted to know about their American fathers (even the black GIs). These mixed children experienced every type of discrimination imaginable. This story was so real it made me sad just reading it. Well worth the read.
I think it is very well written and a great insight into human character. The title was well chosen
And the story demonstrates how much damage is & can be done by keeping secrets from our
loved ones & yet people do it all the time. In our minds it is a form of protection & in some cases,
I do think it is better. This is a very well written story & a very interesting, yet very scary & troubled
time in our history. For some reason, I've always thought that there wasn't any racism & prejudices in the European countries, even during that time, but obviously I was very wrong. And of course, it was horribly wrong for the Armed forces to treat our black citizens the way they were treated when they were fighting for our freedom as well. The hypocrisy...unbelievable. But this story told it like it was. And once I started reading this book, I could hardly put it down! I liked it very much & highly
recommend it to everyone. It also piqued my interest in the beautiful descriptions of the places in Wales & would like to visit.
I had never read anything about the implications of race in the 2nd WW, especially not in the British Isles. Because their husbands have been conscripted, Eva and her friend are doing jobs are doing men's jobs to support their households. After a contingent of American soldiers are stationed nearby, Eva meets and falls for Bill, the first person of color she's ever known. The resulting pregnancy changes the lives of three generations.

The characters were believable and likeable. I enjoyed the story, although some of it was predictable. I really enjoyed it.
The Color of Secrets speaks to generations of people who have tried to hide where they came from, and in doing so robbed themselves and their prodigy of marvelous cultural and biological knowledge. They suffered in secret as much as if they'd never gone into hiding, never started "passing" for something different, something acceptable.
The characters are well developed in the context of the storyline and they are fluid enough to see them adapt and change, and even grow in spite of an unwillingness or a fear to do so. The things mothers and fathers will do for their children. It's a two-edged sword.
I imagine the thousands upon thousands of persons who found themselves in similar situations by chance or by their own doing all over the world. I imagine those living in deceit at this very moment even knowing we live in a time of multiculturalism and interracial or interethnic parenting. I feel for any child that isn't aware of their ancestry that may learn that ancestral secret on the day a new babe is born. The webs we weave when we practice to deceive. I think that sums up the common thread woven throughput this novel.
I listened to the Audible version.
I was recommended this book by , based on previous selections of books I have read. What a disappointment! Never again! Several times I almost quit reading it, but I kept plugging along. I kept thinking it has to get better, but it never did. The only thing I learned from reading this book was if it doesn't "grab" in the first 20/30 pages, don't waste your time!
This book is nothing more than one big (boring) soap opera. All it needs is the dramatic and cheesy music to segue between chapters. The plot is predictable, the characters are one-dimensional and the story just drags on and on and on.

Author Lindsay Jayne Ashford tells the oldest of tales infidelity during war. Eva, who is married and has a son, lives in a small British town. Her husband, Eddie, has been declared missing and presumed dead. She has had no word about him for two years. Meanwhile, American GIs arrive. After being persuaded by her best friend to attend a dance at the civic hall, she meets Bill. The two have a steamy affair. (Lots of sex scenes in this book!) She gets pregnant. He gets shipped out. Oh wait! She’s white. He’s black. None of these details is a spoiler; they are all in the book description.

I plodded through it and finished it. The ending did not come full circle to the prologue, which was very confusing. This book was a huge disappointment. The plot idea is sound; it’s a shame it wasn’t developed as it could have been.
