I have to say I'm really getting sick of reading this. It is so far from reality, it's almost as bad as patriots. The main character, gardener, is just shy of superhuman. The vision of him simply waltzing into a fireteam of security contractors kitted out with full auto M4s, armor, professionally trained, etc......while his weapons are only a ruger vaquero and a colt single action black powder pistol?? Right.....let me know how that turns out for you in real life. I am so sick of how he suddenly, without a second of training, turns into the prime american badass capable of leading a squad of other gamerboy douches into withering fire with nary a scratch. And now there is 'Freya', who apparently is psychic and can talk to animals, predict the future, shot fire from her eyes, yadda yadda. It's really, really tiring to be constantly reminded of just how badass he is by his insistent pistol whippings and complete and total lack of respect for life. Someone look at him wrong? Shoot him. Improper grammar? Shoot him. Forget to say 'bless you' after a sneeze? Guess what...he gets shot. This gardener moron wouldn't last a week in a real life american apocalypse. The LEAST a writer can do is make a somewhat plausible story. At this point I wouldn't be surprised if aliens landed and took gardener away to be the sheriff of their home planet.
I downloaded all of the books at once, and I highly doubt I'm going to bother reading the remaining two. There are dozens of better zombie/apoc books available. And yes, I've read zombie books that are more realistic and believable then this garbage.
I don't know who this 'nova' character is, but taking a cue from his writing style, he sounds like an early 20s gamerboy whose only experience is airsoft and call of duty.

Very good follow up to Volume I, and picks up exactly where the first book left off.
It gets a little bogged down at times with details and weapons and planning and such, but because the scenarios in this book are so....POSSIBLE, you can't help but wonder what you would do in the same circumstances.
Being the tinfoil hat wearing conspiracy theorist that I am, I can really see the events of this story happening in real life. The economy sucks, people are hungry and desperate, and there is no relief in sight; the government is ineffectual, the citizens are angry and they are Not Gonna Take It Any More. That's REAL life, and that's what's happening in this story.
Even with my tinfoil hat, though, if I cannot get a vente, triple shot, extra foam, vanilla skim latte EVERY morning, I'd be ready to shoot someone. So, though I have the skills and knowledge to fend for myself during the economic apocalypse, I know my spoiled self would complain like a whiny beeyatch when I can't get my coffee, much less shoot a rabbit to feed my kids if I have to.
I was really enjoying this book. It is very real, very possible, and really easy to imagine this happening in our real lives. The characters are believeable, the scenarios are well thought out. The continuation of the story was good, the flow and pace was good, our favorite characters reappeared and then...wait, what? A "special" character is introduced that automatically renders this book null and void as far as the believability aspect.
Not that that's a BAD thing, it's just that with the first volume and then 3/4 of this volume, you have the impression that the author is living and expecting this to be the outcome of our country, and that this book is really a fictionalized attempt at non-fiction, intended to get us all to wisen up, smarten up and get prepared.
And that also is not at all a bad thing.....too many of us (not ME, that's for sure - it's the whole tinfoil hat thing) are sheep being led to slaughter, do not pay enough attention to current events to foresee what's headed down the pike, and believe that Our Government Is Here To Serve Us and will Take Care of Things when the crap goes down.
The new and "special" character adds an aspect that makes this just another work of fiction, and honestly, I am really surprised the author went down that road. Mental conference calls.....huh.
At least this time around, the author has taken the time to have someone look over his manuscript before the book was published. I can tell it was not a professional editor; it was not perfect, and those of you who are as anal as I am about the written word will have some problems with it, but it is MUCH BETTER than the first book, and thus easier to read and follow.
I am a real fan of post acopalyptic/disaster/survival fiction. I read all the good ones, then the mediocre ones, and now...this. I liked the first book a lot, thought it had a lot of promise. Although there was something cocky and arrogant about Gardener, considering his circumstances, he was real character, well developed, as were the others. The second book - I tried to stay with it, but it got more and more about brutality and graphically described killing and guns. I don't need a detailed description of plunging a knife into someone's eyeball or reading about brains flying all over the place. When the bizarre character, Freya, from outer space or wherever was introduced, it brought the book down bit by bit. A fantasy character does not fit into the brutal survival story. It was distracting, like I had to keep shaking my head, saying, huh? The author should have thought about how else he could have expressed whatever it was this character was supposed to represent. If you like lots of descriptions of gore and brutality but not much story, this is your book. I couldn't finish it. I see a lot of writers throw these books together quickly and instead of a substantial and original story, they fill in with endless descriptions of guns, gun supplies, who has a gun, how he's carrying his gun, other guns he has, ammo, names of ammo, quantities of ammo... another filler is endless conversations ABOUT disastrous conditions going on elsewhere, but the characters aren't involved in them, just talking ABOUT them, and finally, there's the endless description of supplies that folks are collecting for their survival needs. I read (part of) one book where 43 pages were devoted to stockpiling supplies complete with excruciating detail ABOUT the supplies....
