This book bears a few grisly truths, much like life. Berkeley's details here and there make sure you don't miss the important pictures. Would I read it to a child? Only if I've spent a few years showing him how the world really is in gentle glimpses. Would I recommend it to an adult? Only if they are open to thoughts and ideas, only if they too were victims of less than perfect circumstances in life. This book struck home to me, actually far closer to home than I cared to go, but ultimately like so many things, the results were fortifying, showing that relentless spark of hope we all need, no matter our circumstances.

I was always a big follower of the Bloom County strip, and since I also grew up in a family that included dachshunds (and assorted mutts), this book was a must-have from the time I glanced the cover. Sam the Lion, an Austrian red dachshund with a Duuglitz tuft, is the Edward Cullen of doxies. He'll capture you heart from his first encounter with Heidy, and their touching after school scene is so endearing I found it reminiscent of the meadow scene from Twilight.

But seriously, this is a wonderful book for young (but not too young) and old. For those who think kids will be too traumatized by the cruelty, remember that a fellow named Walt Disney introduced most of us to these kinds of harsh realities in a little film called "Bambi". In "Flawed Dogs" we follow Sam's fall from grace, years of unspeakable living conditions, and ultimate redemption through sacrifice. Berkeley's illustrations are wonderful! He hasn't lost his touch one bit - in fact, I think he's better than ever! I would love to see "Sam the Lion" t-shirts promoting animal rescue & adoption come from this. You will be searching the doggie rescue websites after reading it (as well you should) because there is no love like the unconditional love of a rescued animal.
Loved this book so much I read it 2Xs in 4 days! Is the story of a champion show dog who falls into evil hands & is horribly abused. Eventually, a little girl loves him & it has a happy ending. Although this was apparently written for kids, I would not recommend it for a child under about 13. (I'm in my 50's & see it more as an easy read adult book.) The abuse described in the book is graphic & horrid... I cried through 1/2 the book. But the moral that we are all "flawed" & we can all be champions is fabulous. If you are big on rescue dogs, like I am, & you can handle the sad parts, you will love this book! And who does not love the writings of Berkley Breathed? He has such a knack for quirky, kooky, yet oh so perfect descriptions. He must be a dog lover himself, as the description he gives (pg 18-21) of a dog kiss is so sweet...
I think this was a very good book. It kinda shook me up at some points. I have rescued eight dogs in my fifty one years, so I love Dogs. I know what they go through sorta. This gave me a good view from the dogs point of view and it is always good to read something from Berkeley Breathed.
One of the most enjoyable reads I have had in some time. I passed it along to others and out of the 7 other people that have read it I know. They all love it.
What can I say.. this book came from the best chronicler of the last third of the 20th Century. I'm still a bit sore that Mr. Breathead has abandoned political cartooning -- we could use his talents now -- but he more than makes up for it in his current literary bend.

Flawed Dogs is flawless. This isn't a book to read to toddlers or even let a gradeschooler read it -- but early teens and beyond *should* read it. It's a tough read, I found myself crying in some sections - but that's only because Mr. Breathead is such a sublime illustrator and writer. I say people *should* read it because after reading this, you may just look at the neighborhood stray with different eyes. This book, at it's core, is about the unconditional love pets give us. It urges us to love them back -- even -- especially -- if they are Flawed Dogs.
If you haven't read this book you should! I love it and I've been reading it aloud every year in my classroom for over six years. Even the most reluctant reader ends up glued to the story and rooting for a happy ending for Sam the Lion! Perfect blend of moments that will make you laugh out loud, want to cry, and have you on the edge of your seat. At the conclusion the only thing to do is set the book down and say, "That was perfect!"
