At first I was a little thrown off, the author did not pick up exactly how she left off in the last book. I thought I had missed something but a little bit in she explains somewhat of what I was missing. That was the only thing that I did not really like about this 5th installement. Other than that it was excellent.

After Jackson, Harper, Mary Anne & Lea enter the Shadow World they are still being hunted. In the Shadow World there are still hunters looking for Harper (not to kill her, but to bring her back to the order). All of Harper's friends fight against the Order to keep her safe. The safest place is the Underworld. A hidden sanctuary of sorts within the Shadow World. Once they are about to enter the Underworld Jackson reveals to Harper that they can not be together or even look like they were together, breaking her heart & protecting her at the same time. Harper knows something is going on with Lea & Jackson but he just will not trust her enough to tell her the truth. Jackson is trying to keep her safe no matter what. But no one will listen to Harper, she wants to fight the Order of Shadows, she wants to become stronger, she wants to gather an army made of Demons & Witches who want to fight but everyone is afraid. They are willing to defend but afraid to fight. Harper is tired of waiting for others to take action. Harper takes her own action to build her powers & her strength. Her methods are not by the rules but if she was to obey the rules 50 years would pass before action of any kind would be taken against the Order of Shadows.

Some things go wrong in the Underground not entirely Harper's fault but she finds out the truth that Jackson has been keeping from her about Lea & him, thus breaking her into a million pieces. Jackson explains his actions & smooths things over abandoning the "we can not be together because they will not accept us" for "I don't give a crap". Then things are back on track with the relationship. As far as the Order of Shadows, Harper & Jackson must leave the safety of the Underground to find the answer they seek to free Aerden, Harper & all of the Shadow Demons enslaved and trapped by the witches. Once Harper & Jackson leave the Underground the journey is amazing and enlightening. The ending might not surprise you but it will leave you wanting the next book ASAP.

After the Order of Shadows threatens Harper, she must seek refuge and plan her next course of action. While training, she discovers that she has some hidden abilities, strengths and some shocking truths about herself. With new information gathered, she must decide the best way to face the threat of the Order.

I know I said Shadow Demons was the best book yet but this book surpassed it. Rival Demons is a story full of love, heartache, facing ones inner demons and discovery of self. This is by far the best book the author has written. The emotion was so intense and deep that it boosted Harper's character to another level.

After feeling helpless, Harper has made the decision that she will not allow herself to feel like a victim ever again. She is dead set on fighting when the time comes. In this book, she starts training and learns more about her inner strengths than she thought possible. She becomes very isolated in this story so we get to see a lot of her inner struggles allowing us to see deeper into her heart. Personally, I have grown rather fond of Harper's character and will be sad when this series ends.

Some readers may be a little discouraged from the story in this book because so much of it is the characters stationary while they try to plan their next move. But believe me, it is definitely worth it in the long run. When I finished the previous book, I was wondering how the author was going to bring the story together in just two more books because there seemed to be so much left to wrap up. But in this book, you see everything come together and it becomes clear how the next book will be the last.

I love the direction the story has taken with the shadow world and learning how everything started as well as what they must do to end it. We finally get to see why Harper is special and what role she will play in ending the war. This book has a great ending and now I am dying for the last book, Demons Forever, to come out.

I hate to say it but this was easily my least favorite out of the entire 5 I've read so far. I can see from a quick glance strolling to get to the "write a review" on the books main page that, I'm in a denomination all of my own.

There's just not enough oomph to everything in this one as there was in the previous 4. Its not bad but I felt out of touch with a few characters and it took until the very near end to finally reconnect. I don't know, maybe I'm perhaps the only one who felt deserted? After everything that has happened with everyone involved there still seems to be a cloak of unexplained things. Then there is also the fact that a lot of stuff is sort of thrown into this last book. Don't get me wrong, I love new characters and plots they are what keeps things going and interesting. But I felt like the beginning was not strong and the ending was overdone. I'm hoping book 6 will settle my restlessness and put everything to bed. Its still an awesome series and I'd still wholeheartedly would recommend. It was just a bit too over the place for my liking.
